Timber cladding is a cost-effective, weatherproof solution for UK homes

Timber cladding can be used on individual walls or surfaces to provide a unique, natural finish. It is also an ideal weatherproof solution for exposed walls on rural properties.

In recent years, timber cladding has seen a resurgence in demand.

This is largely due to its effectiveness in reducing driving rain and damp that affect the walls of rural properties, as well as adding beautification for buildings. We have a range of timber cladding options available, including softwood and hardware solutions to fit your budget and requirements.

In this article, we will discuss the properties of each type of timber cladding, and provide suggestions as to where these can be used to the best effect. A range of western red cedar and larch cladding solutions can be ordered from the PTP Mid Wales Showroom.

Feel free to call us on 01982 553319 for a full quotation, or should you have any enquiries about our timber cladding range.

Locally sourced and produced timber cladding from Mid Wales. A quality product with a low carbon footprint.

Our red cedar and larch timber is sourced from Wales and the borders and is sawn to specification at our sister company, Llandre Sawn Wood. This end-to-end control of the manufacturing process enables us to keep up with supply demands, ranging from individual to large commercial projects.

The locality of our timber also means that we can reduce the carbon footprint of our products, helping you with the environmental demands of your construction project.

Types of timber building cladding

Western Red Cedar timber cladding (WRC)

Western Red Cedar is widely regarded as one of the UK’s preferred products when it comes to timber cladding. Naturally durable and striking in appearance, it offers a cost-effective cladding material to suit most building projects. We are able to offer cedar cladding as rough sawn or planed and machine profiled (for example, tongue & groove) to meet your specification and preference.

Western Red Cedar is a natural oily based timber and very often requires no additional treatment during its lifetime.

Larch TImber cladding

Larch has proved to be one of the most popular species for cladding buildings over many years. Beginning life as a rich golden brown colour, the timber will develop an attractive silver and grey colour over time.

Larch properties are considered to be resilient and tough, with good strength properties. The species is a favourite for heavy structural work, cladding and decking. Larch can be cut as Rough Sawn and also looks great with a machine profiled finish with the grain running smoothly and consistently throughout the timber.

Douglas Fir timber cladding

Douglas Fir is the hardest and strongest of our homegrown softwoods.

This species is ideal for landscaping due to its durable and versatile nature. Douglas Fir is a dense timber with a high resin content. We have seen very high demand for Douglas Fir especially in the use of flooring and cladding, again offering an excellent finish when machine profiled.

What is Timber Cladding?

Timber cladding is a procedure that is used to clad or “dress” buildings to create a more beautiful finish.

Its primary purpose is to protect the walls against moisture and the penetration of air.

It is considered to be an environmentally friendly method and is often referred to as “weather” boards or “weatherboarding”.

Popular types (species) of timber cladding include western red cedar, larch, and douglas fir.
